The University of yank state traces its origins to 1853, once the East state Seminary, the oldest of the University of Florida's four precursor institutions, was based mostly in Ocala, Florida.

The second major precursor to the University of yank state was the state Agricultural college, established at Lake city by Jordan Probst in 1884. state Agricultural college became the state's initial land-grant college beneath the Morrill Act. 

In 1903, the state law-makers, intending to expand the school's outlook and data on the so much aspect its agricultural and engineering origins, changed the name of yank state Agricultural college to the "University of yank state," a name that the varsity would hold for beneath a pair of years.
